Homeless Project

Here at Northampton Harlestone Road Seventh-Day Adventist church, we are not only keen to preach the Gospel, but to also live the Gospel.

Since October 2014, a group of us were inspired to start helping in a practical way in our community, the area of focus being Northampton Town Center and concentrating on those who may be homeless or have fallen on hard times. On Friday evenings we try to ease the burden or strain of the prospect of being out on the streets all night with limited food and resources to keep warm. We give sandwiches, hot drinks, soup, gloves, hats, and scarves and on occasion have sourced blankets etc to try and help further. The ages have ranged from those in their late teens to those post retirement age and each person has always been extremely grateful for the help and also pointed out others who may need help also.

It has got to a point now where a level of trust has been developed and relationships have been formed, and we have been truly blessed and amazed at the way God has blessed us through this experience-please pray that these individuals will also respond to the invitations to attend our upcoming campaign. Contact has been made with local organisations and we have been looking into ways to support these organisations, whether this be in the form of a local Food Bank or simply with donations.

We have already struck up a partnership with Northampton Borough Council’s Outreach Team.  They are a small team who visit the streets of Northampton, trying to find the rough sleepers and offer them hope and help. They work closely with other local groups and do all they can to get these people back on their feet and into accommodation.   However they have very limited funding, so as a church we are looking for donations so that we can do our bit to fill that need.   We have already been able to help them but donating funds to provide 3 young men with passports (as their’s had been lost or stolen) and now all 3 men are back in employment and are now able to rent accommodation.  Here we have one of the young men (Darius) with the ladies from the Outreach team.

We have been blessed to make many friendships with the people we have met.  One of them, a Scottish man called Clarke, wrote us a letter, which Bro Gyles read out one Sabbath,   Click on the video below to hear Clarke’s testimony.
Most recently we have also set up a partnership with Re:Store Northampton, who run the towns largest Food Bank. They do a huge amount of voluntary work and have a truly amazing set-up.

On the back of that partnership, we are now running one of the Distribution Points (every Monday at Central Church, Highlands Avenue) and soon we hope to be able to start a distribution point at our church here at Harlestone Road.  This will open up many more opportunities for us to serve the community, including inviting people to our fellowship lunches. Other ideas in the pipeline are for a children’s clothes bank (especially babies clothes) and possibly a toy bank too.

A fundraising site has been setup for those who would like to donate to these causes. Click on the link below to access the site:
